Hello!

Whatever I'm trying to do, I just can't get the sound working on my Sony Vaio FS315H.
After having the kernel recompiled about a dozen times and tried everything I could possibly think of I have no more ideas what to try, so hopefully someone here can point me to the right direction.

Actually right now I'm at the point where I got the Alsa-module working and even alsaconf detects the soundcard but after it finishes ("Now ALSA is ready to use. Have a lot of fun!") I still don't have sound.
I could even make /proc/asound/cards state

But there is no sound...

Something really strange just happend. I was rebooting with another kernel-configuration (can't even really say which one) because gnome wasn't working properly with the soundproblems. I got quite a few errors and warnings during bootup. I thought it had something to do with the different kernel config as I haven't updated any modules-config-files etc.

And now in gnome I suddenly HAVE sound?!?!

I've no clue what happend here and why it is working now but I'm actually a little worried I could mess it all up again when trying to correct the errors and warnings...
I guess it'll be another long night till everything works fine.
But for now I won't touch anything but rather listen to some music! ;-)

Did you run alsamixer, and increased all the volume levels, and removed all the <M>'s?

Yes, I did but it didn't work...
Currently with the "old" kernel and the "new" sound config I do have sound although there is some kind of noise when I play something.

dmesg now says:

But as I said, I did not do any updating to the modules, nor rerun alsaconf or anything like that.
Unfortunately I'm still not sure what the 'working' kernel configuration exactly was, so I guess I'll have to start all over again...

bye

hi,
try to check if your UAA is connectet with modem.
if so try recompile the kernel without the modem.

I think you are already using the latest alsa version, which i thought had the headphone jack/line jack sense switch problem fixed, so this probably won't help --

Hi,

did you find an answer to the sound problem. I have problems with a FS415E.

Hi!

I have the same problem with my Intel AC97 on Benq Joybook S72. I've tried different kernel versions and configurations. Alsa can find my soundcard, also PCM, Master, etc. in alsaconf is on maximum but I can't hear any sound. There are no errors and all seems right mut I can't hear any sound. It would be great if anybody could help me.

P.S. Sorry for my incorrect English sometimes, I am russian... =)

The symtptoms being described sound just like what I had. Google led me to a posting mentioning the External Amplifier switch (it's way off to the right on alsamixer). With Debian 2.6.8 and alsa, this is switched to external amp, which appears to turn off the speakers and drop the headphone jack level way down, so you can connect the headphone jack to a conventional hi-fi aux inputs. Flipping this (I simply used the Mute 'm' command caused sound to suddenly burst into life.

Up until today I was using SUSE 10.0, on which sound worked perfectly fine until the first online update... then bye-bye sound. Kernel glitch? I wondered. No amount of fiddling with settings seemed to do the trick. Wanted to try Fedora Core 5 anyway so I threw that on here... same thing, newer kernel. ???? Surely a kernel glitch wouldn't go that many revisions without a fix.

Up late trying to fix the problem. Finally ran kmix similar to your advice, turning switches on and volume up. Didn't have much faith because I've messed with most of that stuff before, over and over, so it was basically an, "Okay, I already know it's not gonna work but I'm plumb out of other ideas so WTF." Nothing at first but kept playing with it a while, then BAM! Much to my delight and dismay, the sound suddenly kicked up at loud volume waking my spouse. Oooooops OMG sorry honey sorry sorry but at least my sound finally works. :S LOL

I have yet to figure out exactly which slider it was (I think it was Beep) but for obvious reasons I will *not* be testing them out again tonight. =)
