View Full Version : Problems with Intel i915GM chipset
Hi everybody!
I just installed SuSE Linux 9.3 Pro on my Fujitsu Siemens S7020BT laptop. Everything was detected right, also the graphical installer worked fine.
After I booted the installed system, the X-Server show ne some nice-colored vertical lines, but no login-screen.
I tried to run sax2 with the --lowres option, but it has the same effect.
Does anyone have an idea, where I should start to search for the problem?
Could it be a Problem with the Intel i915 garphics controller?

* Download the newest kernel from ftp://ftp.kernel.org:/pub/linux/kernel/v2.6/linux-2.6.12.tar.bz2 (untar and install)
* Download from http://dri.freedesktop.org/snapshots/ these files (or newer):
* http://dri.freedesktop.org/snapshots/common-20050618-linux.i386.tar.bz2
* http://dri.freedesktop.org/snapshots/i915-20050618-linux.i386.tar.bz2
* http://dri.freedesktop.org/snapshots/i810-20050618-linux.i386.tar.bz2
* Untar all from the same location and run the install.sh script (after rebooting the new kernel)
* In xorg.conf: change 'vesa' to 'i810′ (yes, the i915GM stuff is in that driver, with help from the i915.ko kernel module)
* Download, untar, install the ipw2200 stuff from http://ipw2200.sf.net (don't forget the patch - search the site for '2.6.12′)
* Be happy.
vertex 08-23-2005, 03:36 PM Sounds like your monitor specification in xorg.conf is wrong. Can you post the the monitor section of the file?
Cheers,
Ryan

I met with the same problem as well, i installed SuSE 9.3 on my Fujitsu S7020 laptop. So have you found the reason behind it? OR can anyone help ?

Unregistered 09-11-2005, 06:11 AM Check your display settings from /var/log/Xorg.0.log..
The i810 driver has issue with setting the display's refresh rates higher that the monitor reports it can. My i915gm system, is on a flat panel, connected via analog. Though the monitor reports 75Hz max refresh, the i810 driver insists on setting it to 77Hz, causing the display to either flip out, or just refuse to turn on. I forced it to 72Hz like so:
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "NEC LCD1765"
# Option "DPMS"
HorizSync 31-81
VertRefresh 56-72
EndSection
Now it runs beautifully at 75Hz!!
Hope it helps.

many many many thanks !
It worked great for me on a HP Compaq nx6110. I use Fedora core 4 and upgraded to latest fedora compiled kernel (2.6.13).
Now I use 3ddesk and feel as happy as a geek can be :)

Unregistered 11-13-2005, 02:36 AM Hi !
For now I was on Linux 2.6.13.2 with dri 20050718 and in xorg.conf have :
driver "i810"
Today I migrated on Linux 2.6.14.2 and dri 20051112..
Before compiling dri everything was well (byt without dri :P )
after compiling dri, it inserted "i915" and "drm" modules.
I'm making startx and have :
Xorg.0.log :
[code]
(II) LoadModule: "i810"
(II) Loading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/i810_drv.so
(II) Module i810: vendor="X.Org Foundation"
compiled for 6.8.99.902, module version = 1.4.1
Module class: X.Org Video Driver
ABI class: X.Org Video Driver, version 0.8
(EE) module ABI minor version (8) is newer than the server's version (7)
(II) UnloadModule: "i810"
(II) Unloading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/i810_drv.so
(EE) Failed to load module "i810" (module requirement mismatch, 0)
Now I'm on "vesa" driver in xorg.conf and I even can't watch movie on mplayer (vo xv is not working)
What to do ? :(
Why driver "i810" in xorg.conf stopped to work ?
Unregistered 11-21-2005, 09:41 PM Hi Gurus,
I'm having a similar but much more weird problem. The only way I can get any sort of gui on my nx6110 with FC4 on it, is to plug in an external monitor then press the fn+f4 button to switch to it then fn+f4 again to switch back to the lcd and then everything works fine...I have tried every configuration of video drivers and monitors as well as every option I could think of to append the kernel arguments with no luck...the problem is not really and error or anything i just need to press fn+f4 to and external monitor before I can have a gui on the laptop...any ideas?
