Default ear killing sound

Hi guys,
I envy the luckies of you who do not have any sound....

I instead got a incredibly loud high tone which is killing my ears every time my
Toshiba Satellite U200 is booting up Kubuntu 6.10.

It was working before (with no sound) and my days of work on it have produced
an unusable machine by putting some options to the sound file in /etc/modprobe.d

Now , before I can try to fix it I need to remove the sound. How do you do it without causing permanent damage to you ears?

Is any way of disablling sound in HW , in BIOS or by boot options?

Many Thanks

Lightbulb Kubuntu Live CD

I posted this before, but it was deleted for unknown reason.
The Kubuntu live CD might allow you to get at the hard disk, yet bypassing the
loud screeching sound.
